A big thank you!

Another busy term has flown by and we can’t believe it is nearly the end of the year!

The festival day and the Lower School sports day were great fun. The children behaved brilliantly, participated with great enthusiasm and were fantastic team mates, cheering on their friends. Well done everyone and thank you for the loan of your tents and camping equipment.

Now that you have received your child’s end of year report, please return the reply slip as soon as possible and no later than Tuesday 14th July.  Many thanks.

Please note that today is the final day we will be changing books. From Friday we will be collecting in reading  books and Link books once your child has finished their current one. Please remember that the school library is open most days after school and books can be borrowed over the summer holidays.
BANES libraries are taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Here is a link to the national website: http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ . The school’s “Remarkable Readers” website is a great source of information and activities to support reading. You can access this via a link on the school website.

On Monday afternoon the children will be visiting their new classroom and teacher. Please collect children as normal at the end of the day.

As next week is the last week of term, there will be no spellings or maths homework sent home this week.

It has been a pleasure teaching all your lovely children; we have had a wonderful year and would like to thank you for all your support helping the children with their reading, spellings and homework.  Thank you also to all the lovely people who have given up their time and helped in school with reading, cooking, gardening and coming with us on the school trip.

We hope you all have a fantastic and relaxing summer break.

Kite Festival Day

Kite Festival Day was a great success. We enjoyed learning all about kites and then made our own. Ask us how to make them. We are experts! The best part was flying them on the school field. Thank you to those who brought in kites to share with the class.

Our trip to Bath City Farm

Welcome to Term 6. How time flies!

Year 1 had a smashing start to the final term this year as we went to Bath City Farm. The farm was looking beautiful with a wide variety of flowers, vegetables and herbs now being grown. The view from up there was stunning. We had the chance to feed chickens, ducks, guinea fowl and goats. We saw a huge pig called Mathilda with her three month old piglets and two Gloucester Old Spots. We went minibeast hunting down in the allotments where we were lucky enough to find a frog and some newts as well as looking at bees, spiders and ladybirds using a mini beast magnifier. A great day was had by all and the predicted heavy rain stayed away until we got home. Phew! A huge thank you to all the staff/parent helpers who made the day possible. An even bigger thank you to 1CR and 1K for you enthusiasm and good manners. A member of staff said “they are really well behaved children.”

Next Monday (8th June) we start off our next Newbridge 50 topic with a bang. We are having a Kite Festival Day! This will involve making and flying kites. If you have any kites at home that you would be willing to share with us in school, please bring them in on Monday in a named bag. Many thanks.

“Oh let’s gooooooo, fly a kite!”

A Day in the Life of Florence Nightingale.

Well, we have scrubbed the floors, washed the bed linen, dressed wounds, cooked healthy meals, chased away rats and nursed the sick.  Just a normal day in the Crimean War!  As you might have guessed, we have been learning all about Florence Nightingale and having a wonderful time.  Please ask your child to tell you what she did; why she is so famous and what the soldiers called her.

Thank you Sister Sue (a real life nurse) who came in and talked about her job and taught the children how to bandage up an injured teddy.  Mrs Rixson was busy outside measuring up medicines and amounts of fluids.  Mrs Clark and Ms Milne did a sterling job making lanterns and pesky rats (there were a lot of them about in the hospitals of the Crimea  at that time!)

We hope the children enjoyed the day as much as we did.
This is the last week of spellings and homework before the holidays.  Here are the two sets of spellings.

Multiplication, mini beasts and more!

All is progressing nicely with our mini beast topic.  The children are enjoying finding out facts about mini beasts and 1CR are preparing for their ‘creepy crawly’ assembly on Tuesday 12th May.

In maths, we have been counting in twos, fives and tens and learning about multiplication.  The children should be familiar with the terms ‘groups of’ and maybe even be able to read the number sentence 2 x 3 = 6 as two groups of three equals 6.

Later this month, the children will be taking part in a Sing as One morning.  All the Year One children will be joined by children from other schools for a morning of singing together.  They have been practising the songs and might even sing them for you.  Here are the titles of a few:  ‘The Tiny Ant’, ‘The Bare Necessities’, ‘I want to be like you’.

Thank you for sending in the permission slips and donations for our school trip.  We will need a few parent volunteers to come along with us.  Thank you for those who have already come forward.  If you think you might be able to join us, could you please let us know.

Spellings for next week are as follows:

Harder:
January

February

night

fright

light

might

knight

Easier:

Thank you for all your support helping your children learn them.  We can tell from their independent writing that they are having an effect!
